Los Alamos, located in northern New Mexico, boasts dramatic Jemez Mountains, lush green forests, and breathtaking natural beauty. However, it is widely known as the birthplace of the atomic bomb. A few miles outside the brimming city, the production team built an impressive film set having one crucial job. And that was to depict the atomic bomb detonation. Known for his outstanding cinematic achievements, Nolan once more refrained from overly using CGI and retorted to a more traditional approach in film. As a result, an authentic shot of the Trinity Test was recreated with Los Alamos as a perfect background for Nolan’s vision.

The scene sounds impressive, and many have already said it will go down in film history. Therefore, we cannot wait to see the final cut on the big screen. With vast sand landscapes, the shot Accurately recreates the atmosphere, essence, and scenery of the Manhattan Project era.

Sierra Madre, California, USA

Next on our list of Oppenheimer filming locations is a true hidden gem in Sierra Madre, California. We are talking about a Sierra Madre Home designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1904. The house boasts an intricate architectural design and a perfect blend of white facades and wooden elements. Its charming effect was not left unnoticed, and Nolan used it in shooting the movie. Consequently, it is now selling for a little over 3 million dollars.

Filming took place in the upper bedroom, possibly to depict the scientist’s home due to the real Oppenheimer’s house being private property. Also, shooting continued in the living room and the half-acre land on the property. Interestingly, the house is a historical landmark by the Cultural Heritage Commission. Luckily, the house is open for visits. However, we recommended checking for any specific visiting arrangements, as private ownership or other factors may affect accessibility.

One of the biggest challenges while shooting the actual buildings was to make them look the same as they did in the 1940s. The Institute for Advanced Study was no exception, and soon enough, the production team was faced with the problem of visually transforming the modern-day building. The challenge was completed successfully, and soon we will experience how it was to walk the Institute halls in Oppenheimer’s shoes.

Every nook and cranny of the campus, from Campanile Way (the path that leads to Oppenheimer’s building) to LeConte Hall (his actual office at UC) transformed into a backdrop for the captivating film. Cillian Murphy, portraying the main character, was seen filming scenes outside Wheeler Hall and the main library. Interestingly, both transformed with the addition of 1940s lampposts.

Little did we know that it was the University of California in Los Angeles, portraying the famous Harvard more times on film than the actual Harvard itself. Keep this in mind the next time you watch movies such as “Legally Blonde” or “The Social Network”.

However, UCLA does share history with the renowned scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Namely, UCLA was a place where Oppenheimer once taught physics. The scenes will feature Oppenheimer’s time at the university and his lectures within the iconic building.
