Christchurch Airport (CHC) is the main airport serving Christchurch, the largest city on South Island of New Zealand. It was the first international airport open in New Zealand in 1950. The airport is the second-busiest in the country with around 7 million passengers each year. Among several airlines operating the airport, it also serves as a hub for Air New Zealand. The airport is located about 12 km from Christchurch city centre with several ways of getting to and from it. 

How to get from Christchurch Airport to Christchurch

Bus

The most common way of getting between the airport and the city is by public transport. You will find buses departing from the bus station located right at the northern end of International Arrivals. 

There are three bus lines operating the airport:

  • Purple Line: Airport – Sumner via city centre. Buses depart every 30 minutes, see timetable
  • Number 29: Airport – city centre. Buses depart every 30 minutes, see timetable
  • Number 125: Redwood – Westlake via airport. Buses depart every 30 minutes, see timetable

Taxi

If you prefer a more comfortable ride and don’t like using public transport, taking a taxi might be an option. At Christchurch Airport, you will find taxi ranks outside International Arrivals. The approximate charge starts from $5.50 NZD (~€3.20). The journey to Christchurch city centre takes up to 20 minutes, depending on the traffic.

Transfer

Another way to travel from Christchurch Airport is with a private, door-to-door transfer directly to your accommodation in the city. You can pre-book a transfer for a hassle-free experience, a professional driver will wait for you at the airport and take you to your destination.

Renting a car

Those who prefer to explore the area on their own, the best option would be to rent a car directly at the airport. You will find offices of several rental agencies at the airport. However, you can always rent a car online and avoid potential queues at the airport.

Renting a bus

Larger groups of passengers should consider renting a bus at the airport. However, it is recommended to book it online, so the bus rental companies have enough time to advise you on the meeting point and all other information.
