In the west corner, representing Quintana Roo, please welcome the spring vacation’s favourite – Cancun! And in the east corner, representing Baja California Sur, we have a luxury stay and pampering champion – Cabo!

Let’s get ready to rumble!

This is going to be tense. Due to their rich offer, they are considered the best vacation spots in Mexico. But, which is better – Cancun or Cabo?

We compared the offer in both of these gorgeous cities. Some things are quite similar whereas some things are very different.

Without further ado, let’s check out what you can expect on a luxury vacation in these resort cities.

Getting to Cancun vs Getting to Cabo

Getting to Cancun and Cabo is not as easy as one might think. Namely, Cancun is located on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, on the Caribbean sea. It is one of Mexico’s easternmost points. On the other hand, Cabo is located on the west, at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula

That is to say, for example, if you were to get a bus from Mexico City to travel to Cancun or Cabo, the ride would last between 20 and 28 hours.

Hence, the best, cheapest, fastest and safest way to get to these two locations is by plane.

How to get to Cancun

By plane

If you are travelling to Cancun, the best way to get there is by plane.

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is located approximately 30 minutes from the Hotel Zone and Downtown Cancun. The airport offers a taxi service but you need to make a reservation in advance

Booking private transportation with a professional driver to take you to your accommodation in the city is another option.

If, however, you decide to take the bus, Autobuses ADO provides transportation services. The buses pick up passengers right outside each terminal.

In addition, at CUN you can also find the Rental Car Center and most companies are open 24/7. However, if you want to avoid queues at the airport, you can book a car online

How to get to Cabo San Lucas

By plane

Flying to Cabo San Lucas is the easiest way of getting there.

There are two airports near Cabo. Cabo San Lucas International Airport is a small airport with just one airline. Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), also known as San José del Cabo International Airport, is the main airport in Cabo. There is a taxi service at the airport but it is advised to book your ride in advance due to high demand

If you prefer to take the bus, Ruta del Desierto is the public bus operator. The buses are purple and yellow and you can find them in Terminal 1.

In addition, the airport offers a shuttle service, private transfer and car rental options. Whilst it is possible to purchase it at the airport, it is recommended to book in advance.

RESULT: Airports both in Cancun and Cabo offer pretty much the same transportation services to and from the airport. However, at Los Cabos Airport it is not required to book a taxi in advance. Therefore, Cabo wins the first round.

Whether you travel to Cancun or Cabo, transportation options for getting around are pretty much the same.

Public transport in Cancun

A trip to Cancun, Mexico is always a good idea! But what’s also a good idea is to be prepared and know how to get around

Cancun doesn’t offer too many public transportation options. Basically, if you’re not renting a car, you get to choose between a bus and a taxi. However, most of the attractions are close to each other and within walking distance.

Bus

Bus stops are everywhere and they are easy to spot. There is a big blue sign with a bus drawing on it at each stop. Their routes connect the Hotel Zone, Boulevard Kukulcán (downtown) and Avenida Tulum. Make sure you have pesos on you because other currencies are not accepted. Also, if you save your bus ticket after the trip, you can use it to redeem discounts at local stores.

Taxi

Taxis in Cancun are easy to find and are not too pricey. However, that also depends on where you’re going. Also, the rates are not metered so make sure you agree on the price before departing. In addition, make sure the driver has a permit. It should be displayed in a visible place.

Public transport in Cabo San Lucas

The most popular way of getting around, and the cheapest one, is by bus. However, getting on a bus in a foreign country might sound frightening to some people. In that case, you can get a taxi. If you’re headed to a beach, you can get a water taxi as well.

Bus

Buses are a popular way to get around and they provide some level of safety. Of course, make sure you know where your bus is going and what your stop is. However, if you’re not sure, you can always ask the driver to let you know when to get off.

Taxi

Getting a taxi in Cabo is an easy way of getting around. However, they can get pricey. The rates are negotiable but make sure you agree on the price before departing. Also, keep in mind that not all taxis are licensed.
