Getting from Leipzig Airport to Leipzig

Airport Bus

The LEJ Airport and Fritzsche company offer a minibus shuttle service available 24/7 but you have to pre-book it (at least one week before departure). The shuttle bus has room for up to 8 people and runs to and from destinations within a 45 km radius of the airport.

Bus

There are 2 bus lines, line 202 and 206, that regularly operate between Leipzig Airport, Schkeuditz and Delitzsch. Buses are operated by DB Bus and you can find them in parking lot P3. The tickets are sold online or you can get them on board. They arrive at the Leipzig, Hauptbahnhof/Ostseite station and the journey takes around 40 min.

Train

Taking a train from the airport to the Leipzig city center is probably the best option and the fastest one. The trains run frequently and are quite cheap.

The LEJ Airport has its own train station (Leipzig/Halle Flughafen) located just underneath the Main Terminal. The station links to Deutsche Bahn’s local (S-Bahn) as well as long-distance (IC train) services.

S-Bahn

The S-Bahn (lines S5 and S5X) operates every 30 min between Halle, Leipzig, Altenburg and Zwickau. The journey to Leipzig main station takes approximately 15 min. Tickets for S-Bahn cost approximately € 5 for adults and € 3 for children.

IC train

As to IC trains, there are two lines that operate to and from the airport and they run every 2 hours:

  • line 55 (Cologne-Bielefeld-Hanover-Magdeburg-Leipzig-Dresden)
  • line 56 (Emden-Bremen-Hanover-Magdeburg-Halle-Leipzig).

Taxi

There are several taxi companies available at the airport such as DTS Taxi, Funktaxi and Löwentaxi. They operate 24/7 and you can spot them easily just outside Terminal B. The journey to Leipzig city center should take around 30 minutes.

Car hire

For those who prefer to explore the area on their own and don’t want to depend on taxis and public transfer, the best option is to hire a car directly at the airport. At LEJ Airport, you will find major rental agencies such as Avis, Europcar, SIXT, Caro, Enterprise and InterRent. However, you can rent a car online and avoid the potentially long queues at the airport.

Transfers

The most comfortable transportation option is a pre-booked door-to-door transfer. If you wish to have a private driver waiting for you at the airport then you should arrange it before the flight. This option is the priciest, but it might be well worth it if you are travelling in a group of 4 or more.

Rent a bus

Larger groups of passengers should consider renting a bus at the airport. However, it is recommended to book it online in advance so the bus rental companies have enough time to advise you on the meeting point and other necessary information.
