Which Stockholm airport is the best?

Choosing the best Stockholm airport to fly into depends on one’s travel preferences, such as their preferred airline, the location of their hotel and their purpose of visiting Stockholm.

When travelling to Stockholm

For travellers whose main goal is to visit Stockholm, the most optimal way would be to reach the Central Station, located in the heart of the city. Most train and bus lines from airports arrive at this location.

Stockholm Central station is located in the center of the city, and it serves as the city’s main platform for train, bus and metro lines. From there, it’s relatively easy to find transportation to notable Stockholm sites, such as Gamla stan (Old Town), Sodermalm island or Friends Arena stadium.

Cruise ports of Frihamnen and Stadsgarden are also well connected to the Central Station.

All airports of Stockholm have good connections to the city, the only difference being the time required to reach the city.
It will take you longer to get to Stockholm if you land at Skavsta or Vasteras airport, as opposed to Bromma and Arlanda.

When travelling to locations near Stockholm

If your accommodation is located in the city’s northern districts like Kista or Solna, then the two closest airports would be Bromma and Arlanda respectively.

Due to its close proximity to the city, Bromma is also often used when travelling to most of Stockholm’s suburbs.

As outlined above, airports Skavsta and Vasteras are further away from the city, so they may be a good choice if you’re planning to visit other destinations around Stockholm.

When visiting the cities south of Stockholm, such as Norrkoping, Linkoping or Jonkoping, then closest airport would be Vasteras, while for northern cities like Uppsala and Vasteras, two closest airports are Arlanda and Vasteras.

When travelling to Stockholm on a budget

If you’re travelling to Stockholm on a budget, landing at the airports which have frequent flights by low-cost airlines may save you some money.

However, in this case, both Skavsta and Vasteras airports are located more than 100 kilometers from Stockholm city, so the money potentially saved on flight costs may be spent reaching the city.

Travelling from one Stockholm airport to another

Unfortunately there aren’t many options available if you have to travel from one Stockholm airport to another.
You could book a transfer or taxi, which are the fastest but also the most expensive ways.

Alternatively, taking an airport shuttle to Stockholm city and then another one to the other airport is cheaper, however will take more time and could be an inconvenience.

Whichever option you choose, please note that at the time of publication there are no direct bus or train connections between the airports of Stockholm.
