Prague train station

The main or central train station in Prague is located on the border of Prague 1 and Prague 2, which is round about 10 minutes walk from Wenceslas Square and 2 km from the Charles bridge. The impressive original station building is from around 1905; since then the train station has undergone several expansions and reconstruction and now the actual station is below the historical building.

If you arrive at the station by foot, you will be surprised when you enter the building. Inside you will not find an old, worn down train station but a top modern train station with all kinds of facilities.

How to get to and from the train station in Prague:

The easiest way to reach the main train station from anywhere in Prague is by Metro. The metro line C (Red line) stops at the train station (hlavní nádraží). If you are close to the metro line A (Green line) you can change to the C line at the Museum station. If you are close to metro line B (Yellow line) you should change to C at Florenc station; both Museum and Florenc are one stop away from the main train station.

As an alternative to the metro, there are several tram lines and city bus lines which also stop at the main train station.

Travelling between the airport and the main train station is possible in various ways. Obviously, taxi is the easiest but also by far the most expensive. A much cheaper ways of travelling are the following:

• From the train station to the airport the is an Airport Express bus which operates from 5 AM to 10 PM. The bus departs outside the old train station building at Wilsonova street; a ticket for the airport express costs 2.5 Euro when purchased on the bus.
• Alternatively to the airport bus, you can take the metro from the train station to the Museum station where you change to the A metro line (Green line) and continue to Nádraží veleslavín from where you take the bus line 119 which drives to both terminal 1 and 2. The price for a 90 minute ticket is 32 CZK which is about 1 Euro and 20 Cent, which is really a bargain. Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines at the train station. If you travel from the airport to the train station, there are also ticket machines accepting credit cards at the bus departure platform.

Prague train station intercity buses:

If you need to continue your travel with intercity buses from Prague, you have several intercity (domestic and international) buses which depart in front of the old station building (Wilsonova street 8, either side of the road). The majority of international buses depart from the Florenc bus terminal which is one metro stop away from the main train station.

Changing money at the train station:

 At the train station there is an exchange office but use it only for changing minimum amounts as almost all exchange offices in Prague (there are a few exceptions) are known to give really bad exchange rates. A better option to get a bit of local cash is to use one of the many ATM machines you will find in the terminal building.

 At the train station you can find all “traditional” services which you would expect to find at any larger train station. This includes services like:

→ More than 20 Mio. people travel to or from the Prague main train station each year which makes it the busiest traffic hub in Czech Republic.

→ Short term parking available on the opposite side of Wilsonova street, from the parking there is elevator access to terminal.

→ From the inside there are stairs to the old station building, if you have time you should definitely go and have a look, the building is really beautiful.
