The Triglav National Park is the only Slovenian national park. It was named after Triglav, the highest mountain in the heart of the park, which is also the highest summit in Slovenia (2864 m).

An interesting fact is that the mountain is a true national symbol and it is featured on the national coat of arms and the flag.

It is one of the oldest European parks; the first protection dates back to 1924 when the Alpine Conservation Park was founded.

How to get to Triglav National park

There are a few ways of getting to the Park.

By car

You can get by car to the Triglav National Park:

from Italy: you can either enter the park at the Predel pass or at the Kluže fortress from Bovec if you are crossing the border at Ucja (the Loška Koritnica Valley)
from Tolmin: drive along the Tolminka troughs until you reach Tolmin Gorges
from Bohinj: in the Lower Bohinj valley entrance is at the village of Polje, in the Upper Bohinj Valley entrances are at the villages of Srednja vas, Koprivnik and Podjelje
from the direction of Bled you can enter the park at Krnica in the Radovna valley and at Podhom – Vintgar Gorge
from the direction of the Upper Sava Valley you can enter the park from Mojstrana or from Kranjska Gora following roads towards Vršič and Planica.

If you’re coming by car from Bled (from the direction of motorway ‘Ljubljana – Jesenice’), turn right towards Pokljuka at the traffic light. Follow the main road and in Spodnje Gorje village turn right towards Vintgar. Park on the parking lot in front of a hut where admission fee is charged.

Parking is possible within the walking distance of the entrance.

NOTE: The Triglav National Park Act prohibits the parking of motor vehicles, campers, and caravans outside designated areas.

By bus

There are several bus lines which you could take to get to the Triglav National park.

from Ljubljana to TNP and the ticket costs around 6€
from Bohinj to TNP with ‘Hop-on-hop-off’ bus (5€ for adults; children under 10 years free). NOTE: the line runs from 28 June to 31 August
from Ljubljana to Ribčev Laz and Lake Bohinj (southeastern part of the park) every hour

NOTE: During summer months buses run from Kranjska Gora over the Vršič pass to Bovec (western part of the park).

By train

from Ljubljana to the railway station Lesce – Bled, and from there with a local bus.
from Jesenice (connects Ljubljana with Austria) the train takes you to Nova Gorica and back.

NOTE: The railway stations of Lake Bled, Bohinjska Bistrica, Podbrdo, and Most na Soči are convenient starting points for the Triglav National Park.

Things to do

Hiking

The Triglav National park is the best for place in Slovenia for hiking and it has a great number of hiking trails, among which: the Soča Trail, the Tolminka troughs, the Triglavska Bistrica Trail in the Vrata valley the Pokljuka Trail and the Radovna Cycle Route.

The Soča trail has a guided tour if you are more comfortable to have a professional guiding you through the park. The walk itself is not difficult, it is suitable also for children and elderly people, provided they are in good physical condition. It is advisable to have suitable footwear and protection from the rain and wind.

the price is 6€ per person, including entrance ticket to the Triglav National Park Information Centre
the excursion is carried out with a minimum of 5 participants

Climbing Triglav

There are three important ascent routes to Triglav:

the Bohinj Alpine Path, dedicated to the Bohinj mountaineers who were the first to ascend Triglav in 1778
the approach from the Upper Sava Valley (Mojstrana) dedicated to the renowned Triglav priest Jakob Aljaž
and the Trenta Route inspired by Dr Julius Kugy

Visit Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is one of the most popular natural features in Triglav National park, so make sure not to miss out on this magnificent tourist attraction.

It is situated in the northeastern part of the park, 6 km from Lake Bled. The path in the gorge is marked so you don’t have to worry about getting lost and the trip itself lasts around an hour.

Pets are welcome, but the gorge is not suitable for children carriages and wheelchairs.

Visit Savica Waterfall

Another hidden gem in the park is the Savica Waterfall. This waterfall is a headline attraction, 30 minute drive from Lake Bled.

The walk to the Savica waterfall is a bit challenging, since it takes about 20 minutes of relentless climbing (almost 400 steps!).

However, once you get there, all the effort will pay off because the view from the top of the waterfall is fairytale-like.

NOTE: The entrance fee for the Savica Waterfall costs 3€.

Entrance and price

Well, here is some good news. There is no entrance fee for visiting the national park you only have to pay the above mentioned fees if you visit Vintgar Gorge, the Savica Waterfall and a small fee if you wish to visit the Triglav National Park Information Centre.

More travel tips

When planning a hiking tour, you should adapt the length and difficulty of the to your state of fitness, health status, experience, knowledge of the mountains, available equipment, and the weather forecast. If you’re not familiar with the area of the planned tour, consult an expert or hire a mountain guide.

Equipment: Make sure to wear proper footwear (high mountaineering boots with sharp rubber soles) and warm clothing. You should wear also a sun protection (sun glasses, cap or a hat). Bring first aid kit and orientation equipment.

Food: The closest restaurant are near Lake Bohinj and Bohinjska Bistrica so stock up on food and beverages before visiting the park.

Rules and restrictions

Bathing and swimming, as well as all other recreational activities, are banned at alpine lakes
Camping outside specially designated areas is not allowed
Picking herbs and mushrooms is allowed if it’s for your own personal needs
Park trails are intended for hikers, and cycling along the trails is not permitted

Where to stay?

If you are planning to spend a longer period of time at Triglav National park, you should book a room in one of the TNP mountain huts.

The list of mountain huts in Triglav National park, as well as their opening times and telephone numbers, can be found at the website of the Alpine Association of Slovenia (AAS).

Accommodation is also available in some camping sites, hotels, guest houses, private rooms and holiday flats.
