Where Is Outer Banks Filmed? (All Seasons)
In 2020, Netflix premiered a new show, “Outer Banks” by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. This popular teen drama and mystery-thriller series follows a group of working-class teenagers known as the “Pogues”. The plot circles around a legendary treasure linked to the main character, John’s missing father. With its engaging characters, suspenseful story, and beautiful coastal setting, it became one of the most popular shows on Netflix with an imposing number of viewers. The show is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but due to various reasons, the production team chose to film mainly in South Carolina. Outer Banks Filming Locations in Season 1
Shem Creek , Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
Let’s start from the beginning – episode 1. In this episode, we are introduced to Kildare Island, often called the “Outer Banks.” It is a fictional barrier island located off the coast of North Carolina. The island has two territories, Figure 8 on the north, where the wealthy Kooks live, and the Cut on the south, where the lower-income Pogues reside.
In reality, Kildare Island is a fusion of several locations in South Carolina. Do you recall the scenes featuring the Pogues’ boat on the waterfront? Those were shot on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, a popular tourist town eight miles east of Charleston. Also, when at Kildare, you have to stop at Heyward’s Seafood. Or should I say, Geechie Seafood.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston was, without a doubt, a crucial film set where many of the important scenes take place. So, if you want to go on a hunt for film sets, don’t worry, there are plenty! For starters, why not recreate a makeover scene of John B and Sarah at Ben Silver on King Street? Want to stroll down school halls? Just head to Middle School Charleston.
Or, if you are intent on finding clues like Sarah and John, go to Charleston Maritime Center pier and Charleston Gaillard Center. All left to visit are Lowndes Grove, Secessionville Historic District, and Cannonborough Elliotborough.
Hunting Island, Beaufort, South Carolina
In “Outer Banks,” Hunting Island was the backdrop for various scenes on the fictional Kildare Island. Furthermore, the lush vegetation and untouched landscapes of Hunting Island made the show’s portrayal of a remote and natural setting more authentic. The inclusion of Hunting Island State Park and the Hunting Island Lighthouse in “Outer Banks” has also helped to showcase the natural beauty of this South Carolina destination to a larger audience.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina
In episode five, we see the Kooks hosting a Midsummer soirée at the Island Club, a fancy country club located in Figure 8. While the Kooks celebrate their special night in expensive gowns and suits, the Pogues have to serve them.
If you wondered where the producers filmed this show, you do not need to look further. The Kiawah Island Golf Resort is the perfect location for this lavish Kook affair. This luxury beach resort is famous for championship golf and top-notch amenities.
The Palmetto Park Islands Observation Tower, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
The following location from episode five is The Palmetto Park Islands Observation Tower, where the producers filmed John B. and Sarah sneaking off to the top of the Hawk’s Nest tower. As you probably deduced from this, the Hawk’s Nest tower from the show is the Observation Tower in Palmetto Park Islands.
The Islands are an incredible spot tucked away in Boca Raton, Florida. Picture this: lush greenery, beautiful waterfront views, and these stunning houses right by the water. People there are always out on their boats, fishing, or just soaking up the sun.
The Old Bethel AME Church, McClellanville, South Carolina
In the seventh episode, Jon B. takes Sarah to his cherished secret spot – an abandoned church with a bell tower. Fortunately, the church is a real place located in McClellanville, South Carolina, and it’s called The Old Bethel AME Church. Built during the Civil War era, it has been an integral part of the community since the 19th century.
The church’s architecture is stunning and possesses a classic Southern charm that exudes timeless beauty. However, what makes it truly remarkable is its historical significance in the African American community. It has been a gathering place for generations, serving as a sanctuary for worship, celebration, and activism.
Outer Banks Filming Locations in Season 2
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston doesn’t need any introduction, considering how it set the stage for season one’s action-packed adventures. The production of Outer Banks kept the excitement rolling with filming for its second season here! It’s no surprise they chose such a picturesque location. They filmed in some incredible spots, like the historic Edmondston-Alston House in the Battery.
Then there’s The Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel, where the drama undoubtedly reached new heights against the backdrop of the sea. And let’s not forget the International Diving Institute, bringing a whole new depth to the storyline. Plus, they captured the essence of local life by filming at St. Thomas & St. Denis Parish.
The Seabrook Island Beach Club, Seabrook Island, South Carolina
The Seabrook Island Beach Club offers everything you need for a perfect day by the ocean. The views are breathtaking, with miles of sandy shores and sparkling blue waters stretching before you. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying a delicious meal at the restaurant, or enjoying one of the many water sports activities available, there’s something for everyone here.

Careenage area of Bridgetown, Barbados
Now, let’s follow in the footsteps of the production crew and take a trip from South Carolina to the ever-sunny Barbados! Or to be more specific, to the Careenage area of Bridgetown. Colorful fishing boats bobbing in the gentle waters, historic colonial buildings, and lively markets buzzing with activity- the Careenage is the pulse of Bridgetown!
Careenage is a hub of culture, commerce, and community, and it’s no wonder Careenage is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Barbados. Trust me, the Careenage area is where the heart of Bridgetown truly comes alive. Therefore, it is one of my favorite Outer Banks filming locations.
The Fairmont Royal Pavilion, Barbados
After fleeing Captain Terrance and his crew members, John B. and Sarah seek refuge in this five-star hotel. The Fairmont Royal Pavilion in Barbados is not just a hotel; it’s a luxurious haven nestled along the stunning shores of the Caribbean Sea. Imagine waking up to the sound of gentle waves lapping against the pristine white sand beach, steps away from your room.
And the sunsets? Absolutely breathtaking. The Fairmont Royal Pavilion offers a truly unforgettable experience where luxury meets paradise in the heart of Barbados. Trust me, you won’t want to leave once you’ve experienced the magic of this exquisite resort.
The Royal Westmoreland, Barbados
Although Sarah and Jon B travel to the Bahamas, in real life, those luxurious resorts and villas take place in Barbados. One of the lavish resorts is the Royal Westmoreland in St. James. We see this residency in episode one, depicting the Camerons’ luxurious vacation home in the Bahamas.
During their mission to retrieve the $400 million in gold that Ward stole, John B. and Sarah, along with Terrance and Cleo, break into the mansion. This exclusive estate offers everything you could ever dream of for a perfect getaway. And let’s not forget about the private beach access and world-class spa facilities that add to the allure of this prestigious retreat.
Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, South Carolina
Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is an iconic landmark that spans the picturesque Cooper River, connecting downtown Charleston with Mount Pleasant. In the show, the bridge appears in episode three as John B and Sarah return to the Outer Banks from Nassau at the same time as JJ, Kiara, and Pope are driving over it.
This marvel of engineering stands tall and proud, offering breathtaking views of the Charleston skyline and the surrounding Lowcountry landscape. Whether you’re driving, walking, or cycling across its spacious lanes, you can’t help but be awestruck by its grandeur. It’s no wonder locals and visitors alike flock to it, especially during sunset.
Guerin’s Pharmacy, Summerville, South Carolina
Tucked away in the heart of Summerville’s historic district, Guerin’s Pharmacy has been serving the community for generations. It’s not just your average pharmacy; it’s a cherished local institution with a rich history and a whole lot of charm.
Walking through its doors feels like stepping back in time, with its old-fashioned soda fountain, vintage decor, and friendly staff who treat you like family. In the show, we see this beloved institution in episode 5 when Pope goes cycling to the apartment above the pharmacy to find his Grandmother’s key.
Bathsheba Beach, Barbados
In the last episode, the Pogues hide in the Camerons’ cargo ship that’s en route to Guadalupe and plan a takeover to rescue Sarah. After a series of events, they end up on a deserted island, or, in real life, Bathsheba Beach.
Bathsheba Beach in Barbados is a mesmerizing blend of untamed beauty and rugged charm, situated along the windswept eastern coast of the island. Over the years, it became a haven for adventurers and surfers. But even if you’re not hitting the waves, there’s something magical about simply soaking in the sights and sounds of this untamed coastline.
Outer Banks Filming Locations in Season 3
Port St. Charles, Speightstown, Barbados
As I have previously mentioned, in the show, the Pogues travel to the Bahamas, which are in real life the vibrant Barbados. In season three, they continue their adventures in this stunning Caribbean country. The filming persisted in the colorful Port St. Charles in Speightstown, doubled as Poguelandia. Remember the gut-wrenching scene from episode one where Pogues crashed with a plane? Yes, that was in the Caribbean.
Namely, Port St. Charles is a luxurious Caribbean marina and a resort near Speightstown. The development features a marina with berths for luxury yachts, waterfront restaurants, shops, and recreational facilities such as tennis courts and swimming pools.
Cattlewash Beach, Barbados
In the first episode, we get to see several beautiful villas along Cattlewash Beach in Barbados. One of those villas doubled as the Guadalupe estate owned by the Camerons. The Cattlewash Beach is a stunning and relatively secluded beach on the eastern coast of Barbados.
The beach is known for its natural beauty and rugged landscape, offering a more untouched and wild experience compared to the bustling beaches on the west. The beach got its name from the cattle local farmers used to wash in the sea. It stretches several kilometers, featuring powdery golden sands, dramatic rock formations, and powerful Atlantic waves.
The Lion Castle Estate in St. Thomas, Barbados
Another prominent filming location from episode one is the Lion Castle Estate, which depicts Carlos Singh’s estate. The Lion Castle Estate in St. Thomas, Barbados, is a historic site including a plantation house, apartment buildings, and cottages. Originally established as a plantation during the colonial era, the estate has evolved over time and is now primarily a residential and agricultural property.
In the show, this is where Kiara and Rafe get locked inside with tight security. While there, they discover that Singh is searching for Denmark Tanny’s original diary, which he believes contains clues that will lead him to El Dorado.
St. John Parish Church, St. John, Barbados
At the end of Episode 2, John B bids farewell to his friends at the dock and follows the sound of the bell leading him to an old church on a hill. St. John Parish Church is one of the island’s oldest and most significant religious landmarks. This Anglican church holds historical and architectural importance, dating back to the early 17th century.
It is renowned for its stunning Gothic-style architecture, featuring a prominent tower and intricate details. Aside from its architectural charm, St. John Parish Church holds cultural and historical significance for Barbados. It stands as a symbol of the island’s colonial past and the enduring influence of Christianity on Barbadian society.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston has already appeared twice on my list of Outer Banks Filming Locations. This time, the production crew filmed at the Charleston Museum, where Jon B and Big Jon search for artifacts. Disguised as a professor specializing in paleogenetics, Big John attempts to persuade the museum staff to grant him access to artifacts unearthed from the Trinity Church. However, his efforts are unsuccessful. As a result, they return and steal the Gnomon of Solana, a stone artifact they believe holds clues to the location of El Dorado.
St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center, Seabrook Island, South Carolina
In episode 9 of the show, the Pogues plan to travel to South America to rescue Big John. Before leaving, they all return home to say goodbye to their loved ones. Kiara prepares a speech for her parents, but they unexpectedly take her to a behavioral camp. It’s interesting to note that the real-life location of the Kitty Hawk Adventure Camp is The St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center.
Namely, the St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center is a retreat and meeting facility located on Seabrook Island in South Carolina. It is a popular gathering place for various groups, including church congregations, schools, and community organizations.
The Welchman Hall Gully, Barbados
We have reached the end of the Outer Banks filming locations list, and what better place to conclude it than at Welchman Hall Gully in Barbados? Welchman Hall Gully is a picturesque tropical park that is accessible to the public for hiking. This location was also featured in the final episode of season three, portraying El Dorado. In the race to beat Singh to El Dorado, Big John, John B, and Sarah dash through the South American jungle.
