Airports in Hawaii

Even though Hawaii is remotely located from the mainland USA, Hawaii airports handle a significant amount of air traffic. Popular as a tourist destination, especially with US citizens, Hawaii offers several airports for passengers to arrive. Basically, it all depends on which island in Hawaii you want to go. Honolulu International Airport – IATA Code – HNL (~ 21 M Passengers)

Honolulu Airport is the largest Hawaiian airport and one of the top 30 busiest US airports. Airport’s official name is Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, after longtime Hawaiian senator. Airport is located about 5 km west of Honolulu center, and it basically serves as a main airport for Oahu Island. It is also a primary hub for Hawaiian Airlines. As for the flights, HNL airport has regular connections to North American, Asian and Oceania destinations. LA and Kahului are top domestic destinations, while Tokyo is the international. Public bus routes No. 19, 20 and 31 get you to the city. Other options include shuttles and taxis.

Maui Kahului Airport – IATA Code – OGG (~ 5.3 M Passengers)

Kahului Airport is one of the regional US airports, located on Maui Island. Airport serves primarily Kahului city, as it is located only 5 km east from it. Similarly to Honolulu Airport, OGG airport is also a major hub for Hawaiian Airlines. Moreover, Honolulu and LA are the most connected destinations from the airport. Kahului Airport is an obvious choice for people traveling to sights on Maui Island, such as Haleakalā National Park or West Maui Forest Reserve.

Kona International Airport – IATA Code – KOA (~ 2.8 M Passengers)

Kona Airport’s full name is Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole. It is located on western part of Hawaii island, about 7 km from Kalaoa city. Airport is one of the smaller US airports, offering flights to domestic destinations. Apart from Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska and American offer various flights. California cities of LA and San Francisco are top destinations, along with Honolulu. There are no public buses from the airport, but taxis and shuttles are on site. Airport is the primary point of contact for the entire Hawaii Island.

Kauai Island Lihue Airport – IATA Code – LIH (~ 2.8 M Passengers)

Lihue Airport is the main airport on Kauai Island. It is located on the island’s eastern shore, 2 km from the Lihue city. LIH airport serves only domestic flights. Similarly to Kona Airport, California is the most connected state, while Alaska, American and Hawaiian Airlines offer most flights. No public transportation is available, so passengers need to use taxis or car rentals.
