Venice Marco Polo Airport Bus

IATA code: VCE
ICAO code: LIPZ
Passengers: 10 million

Venice Marco Polo Airport is located on the mainland, 8 km north of Venice center.

It is the fourth busiest airport in Italy and counts more than 10 million passengers per year, thanks to the ever-increasing number of tourists visiting the Lagoon.

If you’re planning on flying to Venice, the following guide will present you with all the information necessary for your arrival.

NOTE:

The airport IATA code of Marco Polo Venice Airport is VCE, make sure not to confuse it with Treviso Airport (IATA: TSF), which by some airline companies is also referred to as Venice Airport (mostly used by low-cost airline companies).

How to get from Venice Airport to Venice

Although travelling to and from the airport is not as easy as in some other cities on the mainland, there are a few options to choose from.

Airport bus

The cheapest and easiest way to travel between the airport and the city center.

The ATVO express bus is a direct, non-stop bus that will take you downtown to the main bus station, Piazzale Roma, in just 20 minutes.

This bus goes every 20 minutes and the price is 8 euros (15 euros for the return ticket).

The ticket can be purchased at the airport, at ATVO machines, or online.
Also, to go to the airport you can buy the ticket in the city center.

  • Benefit: Comfortable seats with enough legroom and luggage storage beneath the bus.
  • There is a free WI-FI onboard
  • The bus departure point is outside the airport building, at Exit D, the second lane on the left, platform nr.2.
  • The bus has the same route of going from the city center to the airport.
  • Make sure to see timetable for the airport shuttle.

Local bus

Local ACTV bus line number 5 will get you to the bus terminal Piazzale Roma in approx. 35 minutes, but bear in mind that it is a small local bus that has several stops on the way, and is usually crowded, so travelling with luggage can be a hassle.

Tickets for this bus are cheaper and can be bought at the newspaper stands called Tabacchi (with a big T sign above them).

NOTE: The ticket has to be validated on the bus through the machine.

Public boat

The local boat line runs from the airport to the city center and stops in front of St Mark’s Square, with several stops on the way.

Although an interesting ride, it can be time-consuming, because from the first to the last stop it takes an hour and a half.

The price is around 15 euros for a single trip (about 27 euros for the return ticket) and can be purchased online as well as at the ticket office.

The public boat is also a way to get to the other parts of the city or to the nearby islands.

Transfers

Another way to travel to Venice is with a private, door-to-door transfer from VCE to your accommodation in the city.

To explore transfers to the most popular destinations, visit the Venice Airport taxi & transfer page.

You can also pre-book a transfer to almost any city in Italy from Airport Venice that you would like to visit for a hassle-free experience.

You will find a list of the most popular transfer routes from VCE below where you can pre-book your private transfer and pay on arrival.

Taxi

Just like the bus, the taxi will take you to Piazzale Roma, and from there you will have to walk or take the vaporetto to your accommodation.

The estimated time from the airport is around 25 minutes and the prices range from 35-40 euros.

Water taxi

A unique and luxurious way to reach the city center.

Renting a private water taxi to get you directly to the doorstep of your accommodation, or as close as possible (depending on its exact location) will however be pricy.

A single journey will cost you from 110-125 euros for a 25-minute ride.

Renting a car at Venice Airport

All the major car rental companies, like Sixt, Avis, Europcar, etc. have their offices at VCE, along with some local rent-a-car companies, here you can compare prices for car rentals from Venice airport.

All car rental agencies are located on the 3rd floor of the multilevel parking P1.

NOTE: Even if you book the car in advance, you have to go to the car rental office at the airport before picking up the car.

Renting a bus

If you are a large group arriving to the airport, you might consider renting a bus prior to your arrival.

Buses are offered by several bus rental companies in the area.

Yes there are buses to several destinations from the airport. As an alternative, you can go to the two main Venice bus stations (Venice city centre or Venice-Mestre) from where you have intercity buses to towns like, Milan, Florence, Rome, etc.
The same applies for international lines, to reach Ljubljana in Slovenia or e.g Zagreb in Croatia. you can check intercity connections from Venice or Mestre at GetByBus.com

I arrive late at the airport, will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

No, the last bus from the airport is at 00.50, and transfers and taxis run 24/7.

I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?

Yes, there are several hotels located 1 km from the airport, in the area called Tessera, and they can arrange the transfer to the airport in case you have a lot of suitcases, but alternatively, the walking distance to the airport is 10 minutes.

I would like to visit Venice in between flights? Is that possible?

Sure thing, buses to Venice centre run frequently and you can leave your luggage either at the airport, Piazzale Roma, Trochetto Terminal or Santa Lucia train station. Just look for the Trasbagagli office.
The airport luggage office is open from 05:00 to 22:00 and it is located at the exit hall “A”.

I need to go to Mestre train station. How do I do that?

Mestre is easily reachable by ACTV bus lines 15 or 45.
Buses depart approximately every 30 minutes to and from the airport.

Is There a commercial center near thé airport? Howard can we get there?many thanks

    • Dear Jean,

There’s Valecenter Shopping Center only 7-min drive from Venice Marco Polo, however there’s no direct bus line to the shopping center. You should probably get a taxi instead.

How can we get from Marco Polo airport to hotel antigo trovature

    • Maja

      Hi Carolyn,

getting from the airport to Venice city center (Piazzale Roma) is easy by airport bus or local bus. However, once in Venice Old Town, you can reach other places only on foot or by boat.
In your case, you can ask at the pier closest to Piazzale Roma which boat takes you to San Marco-San Zaccaria “D” pier (right next to your accommodation).

      Best,
      GBB Team

  5. Nev

Hello, Is Alilaguna the most affordable way to Lido?
    Many thanks

    • Maja

      Hi Nev,

unfortunately, we don’t have detailed information regarding the boats that operate in the Venice archipelago. Therefore, we cannot tell which company has the best offer.

      Best,
      GBB Team

  6. Tony

    Hello,
Could someone tell me what bus we can take from Marco Polo airport to Marina Di Venezia, Punta Sabbioni please?

    • Maja

      Hi Tony,

the easiest way is to take a bus no. 5 from the airport to Venice city centre. Then it would be best if you took a boat to Punta Sabbioni.
Once you get to Piazzale Roma by bus, we suggest asking where the boats are at the port what would be the shortest route to your destination by boat.

      Best,
      GBB Team

  7. Lauren

Hello, we are cruising from Trieste but our flights are to Venice Marco Polo, arriving one day before the cruise and leaving four days after disembarkation.
One of our party has difficulty walking. What route would be most comfortable for him? We will return to the Venice/airport area to stay in a hotel somewhere convenient (it doesn’t have to be in Venice as we won’t be sightseeing there) – our flight is too early to come direct from Trieste. Trying to decide if a hotel close to the airport or close to a bus that goes to the airport is best?

    • Maja

      Hi Lauren,

both options are good. If you choose to stay somewhere near Piazzale Roma, you can easily get on the bus to the airport, but also explore Venice while there. A good option to explore Venice in your case is by boat, and the port where most boats depart from is located right next to Piazzale Roma.

      GBB Team

  8. Lynn

Hi does the bus from the airport only stop in city centre , we are staying in Castello would it be easy to walk to thanks Lynn

    • Maja

      Hi Lynn,

yes, the only place where buses arrive and depart is Piazzale Roma. The rest of Venice Old Town can be reached by boats or on foot.

      Best,
      GBB Team

  9. Pam

Could someone please let me know the best way to get from Marco Polo Airport to Hotel Ai Mori D’Oriente in Venice. That’s not too expensive

    Thanks

    • Maja

      Hi Pam,

One option is to take a bus no. 5 to Piazzale Roma. From there, you need to walk to your accommodation through Venice Old Town.
If carrying a lot of luggage, then you can take a boat from the airport to Madona dell Orto. From there, your accommodation is about a 5-minute walk away.

    • Maja

      Hi Sajjad,

there are a few options for getting from the airport to Schio hotel, but they all include combining multiple modes of transport.

      Best,
      GBB Team

  14. Angie

If arriving on Sunday and leaving Thursday, do we buy a return ticket or two singles?

    • Maja

      Hi Angie,

the return ticket is valid for 3 days after the first stamp of the ticket.
So, in your case, two single tickets are a better option.

did you book your transfer on the GetByTransfer page?

In case you did, your driver will be waiting for you at the specified meeting point. If your transfer is beginning at an airport, the driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall of that airport.
If access is restricted for any reason, you will be collected or dropped off at the nearest accessible point. In all cases, we keep in touch during the process.
