Podgorica – Sarajevo

Travelling by bus between the capital of Montenegro Podgorica and Sarajevo the capital of Bosnia and Hercegovina is for sure possible, each day there are 3-4 bus departures between the cities. Bus travel distance between the cities is around 230 to 250 km depending on the route travelled, due to the condition of the road, as well as the time necessary to cross the border most buses have a scheduled travel time of around 6 hours.

When travelling from Podgorica to Sarajevo, you will have to catch the bus from the main bus station in Podgorica, which is reachable by city bus from most parts of town, if you arrive at the Podgorica airport you will have to travel to the main bus station to catch the bus to Sarajevo.

When you are travelling the opposite direction from Sarajevo to Podgorica your bus will departure from the EAST bus station in Sarajevo, which is located near the airport in Sarajevo, pay attention not to go to the other main bus station, as that one is located 7 km away in the opposite end of town. If you arrive in Sarajevo from Podgorica or from anywhere else and have to continue your travel, the issue with the two bus station, is something to pay attention too when you are making your itinerary. As thumbs rule the Sarajevo bus station is the one which have connection to the western part of BiH as well as western countries, the East station, obviously as the name indicate, is the one in charge for bus connection to and from the east.

Other travel options between Podgorica and Sarajevo :

Plane: unfortunately there are no direct flights between Sarajevo and Podgorica, but with one stop over is possible to fly between the cities, in best case the trip will take around 3-4 hours, but in most case considerably longer.

Train: as there is not railway track connecting the cities there is obviously no option to travel by direct train, in cases you insist on going by train, you first to take a bus from Podgorica to Mostar and then catch the train to Sarajevo from there on.

NOTE: When travelling between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is your obligation as a passenger to make sure you have all necessary documents for crossing the border
