Hanoi International Airport, also known as Noi Bai International Airport, is the main airport serving Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is the second largest and busiest airport for passenger traffic in Vietnam, after Tan Son Nhat Airport. The airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 serves domestic flights, and the newly built Terminal 2 for international flights. Moreover, the airport is the main hub for Vietnam Airlines, travel carrier Vietravel Airlines, and budget carriers Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, and Vietjet Air. Furthermore, the airport is situated in Phu Minh Commune in Soc Son district, 35 kilometers from Hanoi downtown.

Getting from Hanoi Airport to Hanoi

As previously mentioned, Hanoi Airport is situated 35 kilometers from Hanoi city center (Old Quarter) which is a 30-minute car ride. Find all the information about the transfer possibilities from the airport to Hanoi below!

Bus

Firstly, there is a free shuttle bus operating between the terminals, As for the city center, there are several options to travel by bus to the center of Hanoi.

The quickest way is by taking Express Bus 86 or possibly airlines’ shuttle buses. On the other hand, the cheapest way is taking public buses (lines 7, 17, 90, and 109) which are less convenient in terms of less luggage space. Moreover, bus stops can be found on the first floor, to the right of the terminal exit of both terminals.

Bus Line 7 to the Thu Le Lake area (Cau Giay bus station) and bus line 17 to Long Bien station, while bus line 90 goes to Kim Ma Station (between West Lake, Hoan Kiem Lake, and Thu Le Lake). A trip to the center lasts between one and one and a half hours. The buses run every 15-20 minutes from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Moreover, tickets can be bought from the driver and cost around 10,000 VND (~0.40 $).

Express bus 86 leaves at both terminals and ends at Hanoi Railway Station (142 Trần Quang Khải Street), stopping along the way at Long Bien Station, Hanoi Opera House, and Melia Hotel. It runs every half an hour from 7.00 to 22.00 (5:30 until 20:30 in the opposite direction). The ticket costs around 45,000 VND (~1.90 $).

It is also convenient to travel with shuttle buses if you fly with Vietjet Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Jetstar. Namely, departures are aligned with flight schedules and tickets cost around 40,000 VND (~$1.70).

Taxi

There are more than 10 taxi companies available at Hanoi Airport, including Viet Thanh Taxi, Noi Bai Airport Taxi and Dai Nam Taxi. Namely, both metered and taxis with a fixed rate are available. They are situated outside the arrivals hall of both terminals. Moreover, a ride to the city center costs around 320,000 VND (~10 $) and lasts around 30 min.

Car rental

There are a few car rental companies including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt that offer to rent a car with a private driver, a scooter, or a motorbike. Namely, it is possible to rent a car only if you have a Vietnamese or international driver’s license. In that case, it may be hard to rent a car, too, as foreigners may not be acquainted with the local rules, but also due to the state of the roads. The price of renting a car including a driver is around 70 €‎ per day. 

Transfers

Lastly, if you prefer convenient online ways of booking transport in advance, a door-to-door transfer is a great option. A professional driver will wait and welcome you at the airport when you arrive and take you directly to your accommodation in the city.
