Cheap travel Vienna Zagreb

If you are travelling from Vienna to Zagreb in Croatia, you have several options to choose between

By Plane:

Travelling by plane from Vienna to Zagreb is of course the fastest option; airtime for the trip is about 1 hour, to that you will have to add the time to get from / to city centre in both ends, which means that the total travel time is about 2.5 – 3 hours. The route between the two cities is currently only served by Austria and Croatian airlines (direct flights), which means prices are not very aggressive; standard price for a one way ticket is usually around 200 Euro.

By Train:

Travelling by train is fairly cheap; tickets are usually available for about 50 Euro and campaign tickets for about half. The up side for travelling with train is that the trip is quite beautiful, the down side is that the trip is very long (up to 13 hours) and you in most case have 1 or more changes. To check current train ticket prices use the website of Austrian Railways.

NOTE: If you are the holder of an Interrail pass, taking the train is of course the obvious solution, depending on the pass you hold, you should be able to use it for the trip to Zagreb.

By Bus:

Travelling by bus from Vienna to Zagreb is not only the cheapest option but also a fairly fast solution. One way ticket price is around 25 Euro and the travel time is about 5 hours. Each there are 6-7 departures operated by 5 different bus companies (Croatiabus, Crnja Tours, Particula, AP Varazdin, AP Imotski). Important to know is that the buses departure from either Vienna VIB station or the bus station at the station centre, so make sure to check which departure location suits you the best.

NOTE: As the buses has to pass both the border between Austria and Slovenia as well as Slovenia and Croatia, it occasionally happens that border procedure leads to a delay in the arrival time, so make sure to plan in a “buffer” if you need to continue your travel from Zagreb.

By Car (Own or rented)

If there is no issue with traffic and the border crossing, it takes about 4 hours to drive the 380 km from Vienna to Zagreb, except for about 20 Km in Slovenia, there is highway all the way. For driving the following Road and tunnel cost apply, Austria vignette 9 Euro, plus two tunnels which cost about 13 Euro, Slovenia vignette 15 Euro and Croatia 6 Euro, which is a total of 43 Euro.
