Postojna cave

Bus to Postojna Cave

More than 20 million people have already visited the Postojna cave which makes it the most visited sight in Slovenia. The Postojna cave is located 50 km south west of Ljubljana. 9 km from the cave, a second popular attraction, the Predjama Castle and Cave, is located.  Here is how you get to Postojna.

By Car:  undoubtedly, travelling to Postojna caves by car is the easiest way of getting there. The nearest highway exit A1 / E61 (from Ljubljana to Trieste) is located about 3 km from the cave. Driving time from Ljubljana to Postojna Is about 40 minutes, from Trieste about 35 minutes (45 km). From Rijeka in Croatia it takes about 1 hour to get to Postojna. Do not forget that you need a vignette to drive on the highway in Slovenia, not having one can be quite expensive. The Vignette can be purchased on all gas stations, also before the border.

By Train:  there are more or less hourly trains from early morning till late in the evening between Ljubljana and the Postojna train station; the travel time is about 1 hour. If you arrive from Italy you have trains from Koper to Postojna. The drawback is that the train station is located about 2 km from the entrance to the cave and as Postojna is a quite small town there are unfortunately no public buses which means you will have to walk or take a taxi to get to the Postojna entrance.  You can check the timetable for the train here http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/

Distances at Postojna Caves

By Bus Domestic: between Ljubljana and Postojna there is hourly bus connection from early morning till late evening, what you need to pay attention to is whether the bus drives to the Postojna bus station or directly to the cave entrance. If your bus only stops at the bus station in Postojna, you have around 1.3 km walking distance to the entrance.  If you are on a round trip in Slovenia visiting places like Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj, you will have to travel to Ljubljana first and then catch a bus from there on to Postojna.

By Bus International: from Italy you have several daily buses from Koper to Postojna bus station. Also from Trieste to Postojna cave there are direct bus connection. As mentioned above, it is important to check whether the bus drives to Postojna entrance or just to the bus station in Postojna.

From Croatia there are seasonal buses driving between Zagreb and the Postojna Cave, also there is a direct line between Rijeka and Postojna Cave. From Istria you can travel either via Rijeka or Trieste in Italy.

Excursion / day trips to Postojna Cave: from Ljubljana you have daily excursions to Postojna cave combined with a visit to the Predjama Castle (price is around 65 Euro). Also from Zagreb you have frequent day trips to the cave. From Istrian towns there are trips to Postojna during the main summer season.

Predjama Castle

The cave castle Predjama 9 km from Postojna caves

Also visiting the Predjama Castle

As mentioned, the Predjama Castle and its caves are located just 9 km from the Postojna cave. The castle is operated by the same company / institution as Postojna, and visitors have the option to purchase a package including entrance to both sights. What is very important to know if you plan to visit the Predjama Castle is that there is only arranged transportation between the two sights in the main summer season, which means at other times of the year you will have to walk the 9 km or take a taxi between the sights, provided you didn’t get there by car.

Useful tips when visiting Postojna Caves:

  • Bring warm clothes, temperature in the caves is only about 10 degrees Celsius.
  • Tour in the cave, including 3.5 km drive with the cave train and a 1.5 km walk, takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • If you travel with kids, you should also plan a visit to the Postojna adventure park – more about that you can read here http://pustolovski-park-postojna.si/
  • If you love caves, you should also consider taking the tour to the Pivka and Black cave.

Can I check whether is there bus to there from Bus Station and what is the Bus No and where shall I alight ?

    • Kristina

      Hi Sharon,
Once you reach the bus station in Ljubljana you will have the opportunity to catch a bus to Postojna cave. The buses run every hour to the Cave entrance. Unfortunately, it is not possible to purchase the tickets for this route on our website, but I am sure that you’ll have no problem with boarding the bus on the day of the trip itself.
      Best regards,
      Kristina

  6. Hi
We will be arriving in Koper on September 5th around 9:00-9:30 am and wish to take a bus to both the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. How much does the bus cost? How often does it come? How much is the entrance fee? How often does the bus leave the cave/castle?
    Thanks
    Walt

    • Dear Walt,

As it is stated in the text, there’s only a train line between Koper and Postojna, you can check all information about departures and ticket prices on https://www.slo-zeleznice.si.

  8. Elaine Pham

    Hello,

I will be coming from Ljubljana in April, likely by bus, and would like to see both Predjama castle and Postojna cave. Is the shuttle available between those 2 sites available in April, or would I have to walk the 9 km (or take a cab)?

Additionally, does transportation routes allow that I come to Postojna cave first or Predjama Castle first? I’ve only read bus and train routes to Postojna caves.

    thank you.

    • Maja Tramontana

      Hi Elaine,

according to the information on the official websites, the shuttle bus operates only from July to September.
If travelling in April, you should consider a taxi. But I suggest double-checking with Postojnska Jama authorities if there is any type of transport available throughout the year.

      Best,
      GBB Team
