Tromsø Airport Bus

Tromsø Airport, Langnes is situated in the far north of Norway, northwest of Tromsø city; on the western shore of the island of Tromsøya. It is a small international airport with two terminals, and a focus city for Lufttransport, FlyViking and Widerøe. Handling almost 2 million passengers in 2014 made Tromsø the fifth-busiest airport in the country. It is located only 5 kilometers away from the city which makes it reachable in less than 15 minutes, and there are several ways to get to and from the airport.

How to get from Tromsø Airport to Tromsø

Airport shuttle bus

The Flybussen (Airport express coach) runs between airport and Tromsø city center with stops at several hotels in the center, the University, and the University Hospital.

  • On weekdays, the first departure is at 7:40 am and the last one is at 11:55 pm
  • On Saturday, the first departure is at 7:50 am and the last one is at 9:15 pm
  • On Sunday, the first departure is at 10:20 am and the last one is at 00:10 am

The journey takes approximately 10-15 minutes, and the price for a single ticket is 100 NOK (~10 €) and 160 NOK (~16,5 €) for return ticket. Children get a discount so the price of a single ticket is 70 NOK (~7 €) and a price of a return ticket is 120 NOK (~12,5 €).

Local bus

Taking a bus to Tromsø is the cheapest way to get to the city, and there are two lines operating on a relation airport-city center:

  • The bus no. 40: Center – Langnesvegen – Workinnmarka – Giæverbukta – Slettaelva See timetable
  • The bus no. 42: Stakkevollan – Breivika – center – Giæverbukta – Kvaløysletta – Storelv – Eidkjosen See timetable

The airport bus stop is located behind the parking lot, and you can buy a single ticket at the Point kiosk in the arrival hall for 35 NOK (~3,5 €), but also from the bus driver for 50 NOK (~5 €). The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Taxi service

In order to avoid crowds that come with public transport, consider taking a taxi. At Tromsø airport taxi stands are located directly outside the arrival hall. There you will find following taxi companies: Tromsø Taxi and Din Taxi. The ride to the city center takes approximately 10 minutes, and the fare price is 150 NOK (on Sundays, the price is almost doubled).


If you don’t like using the public transport and hesitate to take a taxi, consider booking a private transfer which will wait for you on the airport and take you to your destination. The transfer company will send a professional driver to pick you up. You can even pre-order a child safety seat if you’re travelling with a child.

Renting a car at Tromsø Airport

If you prefer getting to the city or exploring the area on your own, you can rent a car directly at the airport. There you will find several renting companies such as Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Hertz and Rent A Wreck. Compare their rental prices and save your time by booking your car online.

Renting a bus at Tromsø Airport

Larger groups of passengers should consider renting a bus at the airport. However, it is recommended to book it online, so the bus rental companies have enough time to advise you on the meeting point and all other information.

  • I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?
    No, the city is well connected with the airport. The last shuttle bus departs usually around midnight, but the local buses operate even during the night. Besides, there are also taxis which are always available, and an option of a private transfer.
  • I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?
    There are no hotels very close to the airport. The first ones start at the distance of 2 kilometers (1.4 miles). The closest ones are Pingvinhotellet UNN Tromsø, Skansen Hotell, AMI Hotel Tromsø.
  • I would like to visit Tromsø in between flights. Is that possible?
    Yes. The city center is no more than 15 minutes away, and you can reach it by several types of transfer. You can store your luggage at the airport, and you can find the lockers next to the baggage carousel in the arrival area. The price is from 60 NOK (~6 €) per package per day, and the rent must be paid by bank or credit card.
  • Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?
    Yes, banking services at the airport are provided by Nordea. The ATMs are located inside the main entrance, by the check-in area and on the first floor, close to security checkpoint.
  • I am continuing my journey outside Tromsø. Are there any direct lines to other destinations?
    Not directly from the airport so we recommend you to get to the main station in Tromsø to check their possibilities. You can also check the possible routes on GetByBus.

      on 23rd of December you should be able to catch a taxi without any problem, just beware, since it is Sunday fares go up!

    Looking at above prices then for three of us its best to use taxi into town @ 150 NOK rather than shuttle 100 NOK each or bus 35/50 NOK each
