Tirana Airport (TIA), also known as Airport Nënë Tereza, is one of two of Albania’s international airports. Commonly referred to also as Rinas International Airport, it’s located in a village of the same name, 6 km northwest of Albania’s capital Tirana.

The airport is named after the Roman Catholic nun and missionary Mother Teresa and it serves as a hub for local airline Albawings and as a base for Blue Panorama Airlines, Adria Airways, Alitalia and Mistral Air.

The record year was 2019 when the airport handled more than 3 million passengers.

How to get from Tirana Airport to Tirana

Airport shuttle

LU-NA shpk is a shuttle bus that operates from 07:00 AM until 22:00 PM. It takes you from the airport to the National Museum of Tirana in the city centre.

  • A single fare is approximately 300 Albanian Lek, which is around €3
  • The distance between the airport and the city centre is 17km, so you will reach it in no more than 30min.

Taxi

If you prefer a more cozy and less crowded means of transport, then you can take a taxi to get to your destination in Tirana city. The journey takes approximately 25min, depending on the traffic and weather conditions, and costs approximately €20 one way.

Tirana Airport taxi service is provided by AHA, they are parked outside the terminal and in the pickup zone and you will recognize them by the yellow colour with an AHA logo and the on both sides of the taxi.

Transfer

If you don’t like using public transport and hesitate to take a taxi, consider booking a private transfer which will wait for you at the airport and take you to your hotel or wherever you need to go.

The transfer company will send a professional driver to pick you up. You can even pre-order a child safety seat if you’re travelling with a child.

Renting a car

For those of you who would like to reach the city and explore the area on your own, the best option is to rent a car directly at the airport.

There are several car rental companies such as Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Ara and a few others. Compare their rental prices and save time by booking your car online.

Renting a bus at Tirana Airport

For larger groups of passengers, consider renting a bus at the airport. However, it is recommended to book it online, so the bus rental companies have enough time to advise you on the meeting point and all other information.

Shuttle bus from TIA to Durres

The Adis Travel and Tours company provides a shuttle bus from the airport to Albania’s second largest city, Durres, only 33 km away. A single ticket is approximately €4 and the journey takes about 40 min.

Tirana Airport FAQs

I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

No, Tirana airport is only 17 km away from the city centre. If you happen to miss all the shuttle buses which run until 22:00 PM, then you can always take a taxi which will get you to your hotel or apartment. It costs around €20 per way.

I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?

Yes, the nearest hotel Tirana Airport is only 300m away, and another 100m away are the Ark and Continental hotels. They offer a full service, cozy accommodation and free Wi-Fi for an acceptable price.

I would like to visit Tirana in between flights. Is that possible?

Yes, the airport is close to the city of Tirana so you can reach it in only half an hour. The cheapest way to do so is to take the airport shuttle which departs approximately once an hour (every 60 min). But another option is to take a taxi which will cost you about €20 per way.

Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?

No, but you can pick up money at an ATM machine in the Arrivals Hall. We recommend you to bring euros with you to avoid low currency rates.
Albanian currency is called Lek, but in general you can pay in euros.

I am continuing my journey outside Tirana. Are there any direct lines to other destinations?

Directly from the airport you can visit only Durres as mentioned above, but if you prefer some other domestic destinations or even foreign ones like Skopje or Athens, you have to go to the city’s central station and see your options. You can always check out the possible routes on GetByBus.

      yes, there is a taxi service at the airport called Tia Taxi. These are the licensed taxis that can be recognized by the Auto Holiday Albania logo.
      However, we still suggest you ask for the price before the ride.

    Is there any bus to travel from Tirana centre or Tirana bus terminal to airport?

      yes, there is an airport bus connecting the airport with the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, which is in the city centre.
      Buses depart once per hour from 6:00 am to 00:00 am.

      However, you can contact the main bus station in Durres or Saranda to see if there are any connections between these two cities.

      unfortunately, we have very little information regarding the route from Tirana (or Tirana Airport) to Himare.
      I suggest contacting the main bus station in Tirana if possible to get the most up-to-date information.
