Rome Ciampino Airport (Shuttle And More)

Although it is a smaller airport, it has good connections with Rome, more specifically with the Termini station, right next to the worldwide famous Colosseum. Among public transportation, you can choose between a train, a regular bus, or a shuttle bus.

Airport shuttle bus

Shuttle bus company SIT bus provides a regular daily connection between Rome Ciampino Airport and Termini train station. The journey usually takes between 35 and 55 minutes, depending on traffic. Tickets can be bought on board or online:

City bus

In addition to shuttle buses, passengers can also use a public city bus operated by the city’s ATAC company. Two lines connect Ciampino Airport to Rome: lines 520 and 720.

  • Line 520 runs daily from 05:30 to 23:30, departing every 20 minutes. Connects the airport with two metro stations in Rome, Subaugusta and Cinecittà (metro line A)
  • Line 720 connects Ciampino Airport and Laurentina Metro Station (Metro Line B).
  • The ticket price for both lines is € 1.50 and it is valid for 100 minutes.

Train

There is a train station at Ciampino, it is just not directly at the airport. To get there you ought to take one of the Cotral/Schiaffini buses from the airport which depart every 30 minutes and a single ticket costs 1,00 € per direction. The drive takes only 5 minutes and, once at the train station, take the train to the Termini station for a ticket of 1,50 €. You will be there in 15 minutes.

Taxi

Official Rome taxis connect the airport to Rome for the fixed fare of 30,00 €. To avoid bad surprises, immediately recommend the driver you are aware of the fixed price, which is valid for up to 4 people and luggage.

Rome Ciampino Airport – FAQ

I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

No, there are many bus and train lines running until midnight, but in case you miss all of them, you can take a cab for a reasonable price of 30,00 € (it is a fixed fare, don’t let yourself get robbed).

I would like to spend one day in Rome in between flights. Is that possible?

Yes, of course. The best way to do so is to take the bus or train which take you directly from the airport to the city centre and is the most convenient way of transportation. Also, if you don’t feel like dragging your luggage around, unfortunately you cannot leave it at the airport since there is no luggage storage, but there is one at the Termini station which can serve you.

I am continuing my journey outside Rome. Are there any direct lines from the airport to other cities?

Yes, you can check the most popular routes from Ciampino Airport in the text above.

Can I exchange the money at the airport to pay for my transfer?

Yes, there are several exchange offices and ATMs at the airport, working 24/7, but it would be better to exchange the money before the trip and have some euros on you since the rate will be a lot higher on the spot and no currency other than euro is accepted.

Can I buy tickets directly from the bus and train or how do i buy tickets?

    • GetByBus Team   •

      Hi Tim,

for the bus you are able to buy it from the driver, for the train there you will have to check when you are at the station, but I would assume there is ticket machines on the station, so bring some smaller Euro coins!

      Kindest regards

Hi I’m trying to find a way from either airport in rome (flights ot booked yet) to rocarasso skiing resort this Sun 18th Feb & the flight does not arrive till 19:10, is it possible in public transport at that time?

    • Melani   •

      Dear Sheila,

First you need to take a bus shuttle to Roma Termini station, the bus leaves at 20:00 from the airport. Then you take a regional train from Roma Termini to Roccarasso, however, there’s only one departure daily and you can only take the train on the following day (19/02) and it departs from Roma Termini at 16:45. So, my advice is to find an accommodation for an overnight stay because this is the only possible solution if you want to get to Roccarasso by public transport.

      Best regards,

      Dear Sandra,

What I suggest is taking a train from Rome Ciampino Airport to Ciampino Railway Station. Trains depart every 20-30 mintues and it takes around 5 minutes to reach the station.

Prontobusitalia (prontobusitalia.it), an Abruzzo bus company, runs a regular service that stops at both CIA and FCO and continues onward to Civitavecchia. Schedule and costs are posted on their website, in English, and tickets can be purchased online.

There’s no shuttle bus to Ciampino train station, but since it is located only 5km from Ciampino Airport it is best to just get a taxi.

    How do
You buy tickets for the atral bus? & the metro? Thanks x

    • Melani   •

      Dear Natalia,

Tickets for the ATRAL bus can be bought in the ticket office inside the Arrivals area or directly on board.
Rome-Ciampino Airport is not connected with the city by metro line, but metro tickets can be bought from ticket machines in metro stations.

    Hi,

the fixed price of 30 EUR for taxi from Ciampino Airport to city center is for Termini station only or to any destination in the city center? I am staying at Town House 62, Via Cicerone, 62, 00193.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Alexandra,

I suggest to book a transfer in advance which has a fixed price. That way you’ll avoid getting overcharged which might be the case with taxis.

The best option is to take shuttle bus to Roma Termini station (the link is in the blog post) and then transfer to bus line 70 (Clodio) and get off at bus stop Marcantonio Colonna. From there you have another 6-minute walk to your accommodation.
