Lisbon Airport Bus

Lisbon Airport (LIS), also known as Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport or Portela Airport is the international airport of the capital of Portugal and it is located in Lisbon itself. The most popular flights are to Madrid, Paris and London. As for the intercontinental flights, people mostly fly to Brazil, however, destinations like Dubai and Luanda are getting more popular. The airport has 2 terminals: the main terminal is T1 and most of airline companies use it. The second, T2, is smaller and designed for low-cost companies like easyJet and Ryanair. Both of them are connected by a free shuttle bus from T1.

How to get from Lisbon Airport to Lisbon

Airport shuttle

The buses to the centre of Lisbon are called ‘aerobuses’ and they are operated by Carris and currently two lines can take you either to Cais do Sodré railway station (line 1) or to José Malhoa Avenue (line 2):

Line 1: This line goes to the main train station and passes by Rossio Train Station

  • The first bus leaves the airport at 7:30 and the last one leaves at 23:00. Buses run every 20 mins, except after 19:00 when they run every 25 mins.

Line 2: This line passes by Sete Rios bus station and Praça de Espanha and the last stop is at José Malhoa Avenue.

The for Aerobus costs 4 and it is valid for both bus lines. You can buy tickets online, at the airport or from the bus driver. Ticket is valid for 24 hours after being validated in the bus.

Metro

Another option of reaching the centre of Lisbon is by taking a metro, which is the cheapest and quickest means of transport from the airport.

  • The red line will take you to São Sebastião station in only 15 mins where you need to change the line to get to the city centre.
  • One-way ticket will cost you €1.50 but if you plan to use metro more times during the day (or trains, trams and buses), then we suggest buying a daily pass for €6.40. (updated for 2019)
  • Metros run from 6:30 to 01:00. The frequency of departures from the airport is every 6 to 8 minutes.

Taxi services

In case you don’t want to wait in line for the metro, or you have too much baggage to take into the bus, then consider taking a taxi. The normal fare of a ride to the city centre is ~15€, but it might cost you even more during the night. Be careful and insist on negotiating the price before the ride, because drivers might sometimes take longer routes than necessary.

Transfer

Private transfer is much more economical than taxi, especially if you’re travelling in a larger group. For example, for the price of €22, you can get yourself a taxi for 4 people. So don’t wait and book your door-to-door transfer now.

Lisbon Airport FAQs

I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

Not at all. Using public transport, you can reach the city either by bus or by metro which runs until 01:00. Or you can get a taxi, but it will cost you more than usual because during the night the price rises.

I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?

The closest to the airport is Holiday Inn Express Lisbon Airport (3*), located 2.6 km from the airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle from and to the airport.

I would like to visit Lisbon in between flights. Is that possible?

Of course, it is possible because the airport is practically in the city and merely 5-6 kilometres from the centre. Buy yourself a daily pass for 6€ (metro, bus, tram) and visit all the main sights in Lisbon. Don’t want to drag your luggage around? No problem, luggage storage facilities are available at the airport (level 2, car park P2).

Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?

You will find exchange services in both Departures and Arrivals terminals and also several ATMs, but we recommend having money before the flight.

I am continuing my journey outside Lisbon. Are there any direct lines from the airport to other cities?

From the airport no, but many buses to other cities depart from Oriente bus station; the most popular destinations are Lisbon – Madrid, Lisbon – Seville or Lisbon – Malaga. If you have enough time, try to visit Coimbra, a famous university town or Tavira, the beach resort.

      Dear Bibi,

Here are Your options: You can buy 7 Colinas Card in any metro station or newsstand and “charge” it each day with a daily transportation ticket which costs 6€ (that would be total of 36€ for each person for 6 days). Or You can simply rent a car which will cost You less but You might have problems with finding a parking spot since we’re talking about July. You can get cheap car rentals on this link . Think about it and see for yourself which option suits you better.

    Hi
We are staying at campo de Santa Clara in Lisbon, is it easy to get a bus or metro to the airport please?

    • Antonia   •

      Dear Tracy,
The easiest option would be taking the metro from Lisboa Santa Apolonia station to São Sebastião station and from there to take the red line metro to the airport.

      Best regards,

Can we take a bike bag on the aerobus or metro?

    • Melani   •     Author

      Dear Tim,

If the bag is not blocking the way for the other passengers in the aerobus or metro, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

      Best regards,

  6. Ava   •

    Good day,

Which aerobus would I need to take from the Lisbon airport to get to the Rua de Angola stop? Conversely, can I also get on another aerobus to the Lisbon airport from Rua de Angola?

    • Melani   •     Author

      Dear Ava,

Get on airport bus line 705 (departs in front of the terminal) and get off 2 stops after at Pç. Aeroporto. Then get on bus line 708 to Av. Almirante Reis/R. Angola bus stop (11 stops).

      Best regards,
