Bilbao Airport Bus

Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the main airport of the province of Biscay and it is situated 9 kilometres from the city of Bilbao. Being the tenth biggest city in Spain and the capital of the province, Bilbao’s popularity increases over the years, including the airport which annually has more than 5 million passengers. The most popular routes are Madrid and Barcelona, and when it comes to international destinations, passengers from Bilbao usually fly to Germany, Belgium, France and United Kingdom.

Local bus

The best way to get to the city centre (Moyúa square) and bus station is by taking the local bus line nr. 3247 operated by Bizkaiabus. The bus runs from and to the airport every 15 mins. The first one leaves at 6:15 and the last one at midnight. The price for a one-way ticket is 3.00, but you can get a discount from a bus driver or at the ticket office at the terminal.

Train

There are no direct railway links from the airport to the city, however if you need to get to the main train station Estación de Abando, take the previously mentioned bus line nr.3247 and exit at the bus station which is located 2 mins walking distance from the train station.

Taxi services

If you have a lot of luggage on you, there are various taxi services at your disposal which wait 24/7 at the Arrivals terminal. The price for the taxi is approx. 21-26 , depending whether it is day or night.

Transfer

In case you need a ride to your hotel which is not easily reached by foot from the city centre, consider booking a door-to-door transfer. Your driver will wait for you outside the Arrivals terminal with your name sign, even if your plane is late (the transfer agency will monitor your flight arrival).

Renting a car at Bilbao Airport

If you wish to explore the city by yourself, don’t hesitate on renting a car, either directly at the airport (Avis, Hertz, Sixt) or booking it online in advance.

Renting a bus at Bilbao Airport

If you are travelling in a large group, you might consider renting a bus prior to your arrival (at least a couple of weeks in advance) to arrange all the details with the bus rental agency. Also, they are used to picking up groups at the airport so they will advise you on the pick-up location.

From BIO to San Sebastian : There is a direct line from Bilbao airport to San Sebastian every day from 07:45 to 23:45, every 30-60 minutes. The bus stop is at Plaza de Pio XII. You can also check the route and pre-book the bus here.

From BIO to Arrasate: Another direct line from the airport is to the town of Arrasate. The bus also stops at Eibar and Bergara and it runs 6 times a day. The price of the ticket to Arrasate is ~12€.

I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

Not at all, the local bus line 3247 is very frequent, but if you miss all the buses, there will always be a taxi waiting in front of Arrivals terminal.

I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?

The nearest hotel is located 2.1 kilometres from the airport – Holiday Inn Express Bilbao (3*) and it has free Wi-Fi, breakfast and parking.

I would like to spend one day in Bilbao in between flights. Is that possible?

Sure thing. The best option is taking the local bus which will take you directly from the airport to the main square. Unfortunately, there are no luggage storage facilities at the airport, however, the bus station Termibus has luggage lockers.

I am continuing my journey outside Bilbao. Are there any cheap bus lines from the airport to other cities?

There are several direct lines from the airport which we already mentioned, to minor cities like San Sebastian and Arrasate. But if you wish to visit other, major cities, check the popular routes Bilbao – Zaragoza or Bilbao – Madrid. You can see other routes from Bilbao on getbybus.com.

Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?

Yes, there are several ATMs located at first and third floor (Kutxabank, Santander, etc.). There is no exchange office at the airport, so you should definitely have euros on you before your flight to Bilbao.
